NBN rollout may mean 18 towers across Lismore area
THE rollout of the NBN may include the installation of up to 18 telecommunication towers across the Lismore LGA.
Cr Vanessa Ekins posted the information on social media on Monday, saying "NBN rollout in Lismore includes construction of 18 microwave towers! I wonder where they will be located????"
Cr Ekins confirmed that the National Broadband Network (NBN Co) had been visiting North Coast councils over the last couple of weeks to discuss rollout plans for their Fixed Wireless Network.
NBN Co was unable to confirm the rollout of this network involved the provision of about 18 new telecommunications towers spread across the entire Lismore LGA.
Representatives of NBN Co have offered to brief councillors on the proposed Fixed Wireless Network rollout, technical aspects of the network, community consultation processes and timing for the provision of NBN services across the LGA.
NBN Co will be available for a confidential briefing session with councillors on January 29, 2013.
A spokeswoman for NBN confirmed "we have had early discussions with Lismore and other Far North Coast councils regarding high level indicative plans for a fixed wireless network for the area."
"Our priority is to co-locate on existing infrastructure where possible, and will, over the coming months, finalise the plans and begin engaging broadly with communities in early 2013."
A council staff member said that "most likely the council will not be the consent authority for NBN towers".
Lismore City Council will receive more information regarding its roll in the rollout at the January briefing.
It is expected that consultation and application processes may start on February 2013 in the Lismore LGA.
