Magistrate to frenchmen: "That's for being a d---head"

A BUNCH of backpackers that were involved in an altercation with police in February, have been sentenced in Stanthorpe Magistrates Court.

Last month, Stanthorpe police reported that a lone policeman was approached in a threatening manner by a number of French nationals late on a Saturday night.

The police officer used capsicum spray in the incident and two men in their 20s were charged from the incident.

The court heard that French backpacker Arthur Jacques Hemonnog was charged with public nuisance after attempting to climb the wall of the beer garden at the Central Hotel at 1.20am on February 7.

Police stopped the man and approached him outside the premises where police report he said something along the lines of "I hate the police".

Police used capsicum spray on the man when he failed to comply with police orders.

"That's what you get for being a dickhead," Magistrate Bevan Manthey said.

He received a $300 fine.

French backpacker Mathieu Leo Remi Guiraudie was also arrested in the incident and charged with three offences for public nuisance and possessing scissors and five grams of cannabis.

He ran away from police when they approached him.

Police later found messages on his phone that indicated he had received the drugs earlier in the night.

He received an $800 fine.
