Alstonville club names green after former greenkeeper
ALSTONVILLE Plateau Bowls and Sports Club celebrated former greenkeeper Ian Lidbetter with the renaming of its main green on Saturday.
Lidbetter worked at the club for 25 years before he died suddenly in 2000.
"This is the first time we've named something after someone and the club has been around for 93 years," chief executive Chris Chapman said.
"His daughter Sarah came all the way from Darwin to be part of the day.
"Ian was a big part of the local sporting community and it was fitting we did something like this.
"He did his apprenticeship here and worked his way up to head greenkeeper for many years.
More than 30 bowlers turned out for an afternoon of two-bowl triples.
A plaque was put up inside with the club hoping to make it annual event.
"We had a full green and it was packed with family and friends," Chapman said.
