Name change bid lost

A MACKAY man's bid to change the name of the Whitsundays so it applies to a wider area has been lost.

The Department of Environment and Resource Management says it won't pursue a proposal to discontinue use of the township name of Whitsunday.

Member for Whitsunday Jan Jarratt welcomed the decision.

"As tourism minister, I am keen to preserve the invaluable Whitsunday brand, which has the power to instantly conjure images of a sailing Mecca, tropical islands and impossibly perfect turquoise waters in people's minds right around the world," she said.

"I'm very pleased Minister (Rachel) Nolan considered my advice as part of her consultations with key stakeholders as I believe this is the right outcome: an outcome that I expect the majority of locals will agree with."

Neil Francey submitted the application to discontinue the name Whitsunday, along with one to have the name reinstated to refer to a wider area to spread its benefits, last year.

He said there was incoherence in the administration of the Place Names Act, the Business Names Act and the Fair Trading Act when it came to use of the name.

"Here was an opportunity for the government to reconcile and rationalise the use of the Whitsunday name and they have failed to do so," he said.

Technically, the name only applied to the area from Shute Harbour to Cannonvale, Mr Francey said.

Others who used the term could be taken to task, he said.

Ms Nolan said the request to discontinue the township name 'Whitsunday' was opposed by the key stakeholders contacted.
