Trainer pins hopes on Mystic Vibe
GOLD COAST trainer Lennie Wheeler intends to make it a clean sweep of Casino’s feature races when he returns to town for the Casino Cup meeting on Sunday.
Last time Wheeler brought his galloper Mystic Vibe over the border they returned home with the Casino Racing Club’s biggest prize, the Beef Week Cup.
This time the pair is targeting the $20,000 Casino Cup and the boss reckons his gelding is going as well as when he last saluted.
“He looks nice and fit,” Wheeler said.
“He wasn’t 100 per cent fit last time we were in Casino but he is looking strong now.”
The seven-year-old son of Dolphin Street is looking for a mile but Wheeler is confident the Casino circuit will suit him.
“Every time I find a mile race for him it rains,” Wheeler said.
“But the 1400 at Casino with the big track and the uphill will be in his favour.
“He probably got too far back last time and still won – this time he should be thereabouts from the barrier (seven).”
Mystic Vibe won the Beef Week Cup with Gold Coast gun apprentice Luke Rolls on board.
But Rolls is unavailable due to injuries sustained in an incredible race fall at Eagle Farm last week where fellow jockey Mitchell Spears knocked him from his mount in the home straight.
Mandy Radecker takes the ride.
“Mandy rides plenty for me so there will be no problems there,” Wheeler said.
But Rolls might want to get back on if Wheeler’s grand plan comes to fruition.
The Byron Bay Cup will be run at Ballina on August 29 and the winner of that race gets automatic entry into the $50,000 Ballina Cup two weeks later.
“It would be nice to get him to that stage,” Wheeler said.
“But obviously there is a fair bit of work to be done between now and then.”
Wins by Mystic Vibe are a real bonus for Wheeler – not only do they add to his training record, they also add to the bank balance.
Wheeler’s wife recently leased the horse from the Beer family who previously collected the cheques – the winner’s prize on Sunday is a cool $13,000.
The last horse to complete the Beef Week / Casino Cup double was the Ricky Ludwig-trained Sundae Jester in 2004.
Another of Ludwig’s gallopers, Row Boat, won the double either side of Sundae Jester by claiming the Beef Week Cup in 2003 and the Casino Cup in 2005.
