Mystery surrounds identity of mute man plucked from waters

QUEENSLAND Police are urging anyone who may know the identity of a man who was plucked from the Brisbane River on Tuesday to come forward.

The man, believed to be in his 20s, was seen struggling in the water at South Bank about 5.00am.

A passer-by raised the alarm before emergency services converged on to the area.

A police officer has been hailed for his actions after jumping in to the river without hesitation to save the floundering man.

Police said late on Tuesday the man, believed to be of Philippine decent, had remained mute and they had been unable to establish his identity or how he came to be in the river.

The man remains in a stable hospital in Brisbane.
