Foetus 'mutilated, disposed': court

A GOONELLBAH woman was surrounded by family in the Lismore Local Court yesterday as she faced a charge for the mutilation and disposal of a foetus.

The woman, 25, faced the serious indictable offence of perverting the course of justice.

Police allege she mutilated and attempted to dispose of the foetus of a child sometime between February 3 and February 4 at Goonellabah.

Police facts and exact details of the incident will not be made available until a plea has been entered.

The offence attracts a maximum 14-year jail term.

It was the accused woman's first appearance in court.

The matter was referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Magistrate Robyn Denes ordered that bail continue.

The accused will appear in the Lismore Local Court again on July 19.

A Strike Force team was established by police from the Richmond Local Area Command in February to investigate the alleged mutilation and disposal of the foetus.
