Bombers drop finals dream after Murwillumbah blasting

THE Evans Head Bombers' dreams of a fairytale grand final appearance in the Northern Rivers Regional Rugby League have fallen a week short after a 35-10 loss to Murwillumbah in the preliminary final yesterday.

The Mustangs booked their place in the grand final against Ballina with the emphatic win at Stan Sercombe Oval, Murwillumbah.

A big crowd saw the Mustangs forge their premiership credentials, scoring two unanswered tries and a field goal on the half-time siren in a dominant first half.

After losing to Ballina the previous week, the minor premiers were unstoppable.

The Bombers opened strongly but were outclassed and unable to make any inroads as the Mustangs forced penalties and turn-overs.

The Mustangs broke the game open in a five-minute period from the 10-minute mark with Toby McIntosh converting two of the first-half tries.

McIntosh was excellent throughout and one of the Mustangs' best.

Evans Head started well after half-time but quickly lost momentum.

Murwillumbah crossed for two tries in a minute to blow the lead out to 25-0.

It took until the 17th min-ute of the second half for the Bombers to get on the scoreboard with a penalty try.

They needed a miracle to win from there, but it never came.

They went further behind until a consolation try two minutes from the end.

In the earlier games, Casino defeated Cudgen 14-12 in reserve grade and Kyogle accounted for Ballina 30-14 in the Under-18s.

Murwillumbah will play in the grand finals in all three grades.
