AS HE effortlessly strums his guitar, Oskar Campbell belts out songs by The Script and Goo Goo Dolls in a voice mature beyond his years.

The 12-year-old from Mapleton has his eyes set on a career in music and with his talent, this is an achievable goal.

Oskar has played the guitar for seven years and had lessons on and off, but as for that powerful voice, that is a talent he was born with.

"The first time I heard him sing was on a microphone up on stage at Woodford," proud mum Lesley Campbell said.

"It was awesome, every time I hear him play, it blows me away - he just keeps getting better every time.

"He never ceases to amaze me!"

It is hard to define exactly what type of music Oskar plays, "easy listening" he suggested, but he does about 30 covers of a variety of songs.

Two of his favourite artists are Ed Sheeran and Jack Johnson.

"I just enjoy playing," Oskar said.

"Sharing music and getting people interested in what I'm doing."

Oskar will start Year 8 at Maleny High School this year, where Mrs Campbell said he would take part in a special music program.

"He will practise for five or six hours a day, sometimes more," she said.

"He won't put it down all day if he is trying to work out new songs he is passionate about."

All the songs Oskar knows he has taught himself off the internet - no mean feat, considering he cannot read music.

But for now, Mrs Campbell said they were focused on the present.

"It is more about getting him organised - he is only 12," she said.

"He has a lovely voice and it would be good for him to get some outside guidance.

"A few people, who have heard him have said they would like to play with or teach him - he is constantly blowing people away."
