Murder charge reduced

A KYOGLE man who allegedly bashed a man outside a hotel in the town last year has had the murder charge against him downgraded to manslaughter.

Charges of murder and recklessly causing grievous bodily harm against 29-year-old Shaun Robert Hyde were withdrawn by the prosecution over an incident last November.

The Prosecution will allege about 10.30pm Hyde punched 35-year-old Kyogle man Daryl Close in the face, causing him to fall and suffer a fatal brain injury.

Mr Close was transported to Kyogle hospital and later to the Gold Coast hospital in a critical condition. He died in hospital on November 19, a week after the assault.

The death sent shockwaves through the close-knit town.

Mr Close's mother Dawn Close was heartbroken by the death of her youngest son, who was close to completing his Certificate III in Tourism at TAFE and planned to start a tour business.

Hyde, who is currently on bail, was excused from appearing in court yesterday.

Magistrate Jeff Linden adjourned proceedings until August 21.

Hyde does not have to appear in court on that occasion if legally represented.
