Mullum's star to shine at Tamworth

MULLUMBIMBY’S Clelia Adams is warming up to kick off the Tamworth Country Music Festival.

Nerves are not an issue for the internationally-acclaimed singer-songwriter, who has opened the festival before in 1996.

“Tamworth is a real blast. I love returning there and reuniting with all my dear friends,” she said.

Mrs Adams has many happy memories of the Tamworth Festival, including having a jam session in her kitchen with Troy Casser-Daley and Keith Urban.

The 59-year-old is proof that age is no burden with her music career shooting skyward in the past eight years.

Her music has been taken to an international stage, with her album Heartbeat Highway getting six Top 10 hits on the European charts.

“It’s a highlight to be compared to all those big American names and still get a nomination,” she said.

Her career path, since she started as a music journalist for GoSet Magazine in the late 1960s, has steadily led her to centre stage.

In the mid-1970s she moved to Tamworth and became a session singer, which encouraged her to take up singing professionally.

Mrs Adams is currently an unsigned artist.

“It not about the money, it’s about passion and love. The music has got to be first,” she said.

The country crooner is ready to boot scoot across the stage after overcoming a burst appendix in 2008.

“That really took a toll on me, however inspiration strikes at the strangest moments. Here I was lying in a hospital bed half-dead and when my daughter’s song came over the radio, inspiration hit,” Mrs Adams said.

Mrs Adams is promoting the spread of country music to unaccustomed ears.

“Country music has a bad rap. I’m planning some hoe-down balls this year to get the music known and appreciated,” she said.
