Mullum chocolatier’s creations are pure delight
CHOCOLATE changed Sarah Wheeler's life.
When the Mullumbimby mum-of three added a daily dose of dark chocolate to her diet almost 10 years ago as part of a paleo-style eating plan, she found herself enjoying increased energy levels, better sleep and no migraines.
With vitality renewed, she became interested in making her own chocolate in a style that was healthier and less processed than commercially available chocolate, and Puremelt Chocolate was born.
Since she launched her business at the Mullumbimby Farmers' Market five years ago, Puremelt has become a fixture at markets across the region. Sarah now makes thousands of chocolates a week for her market customers and local speciality stores and this year, thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign, she will realise a long-held dream of opening a chocolate lounge in Mullumbimby, where chocolate lovers can watch Sarah's signature chocolates being created as they enjoy a chai or chocolate treat.
Puremelt's point of difference has always been the style of Sarah's chocolate and how it is made. There's are just four ingredients - raw cacao butter, raw cacao powder, freshly scraped vanilla beans and dark agave syrup - which makes it vastly different to the processed, refined sugar and additive-laden stuff that big food manufacturers like to pass off these days as chocolate. It's also made from scratch - not from the chocolate button that almost all chocolatiers use.
Sarah's chocolate is gluten and cane sugar free, as well as vegan and organic, which means it can be enjoyed by people who wouldn't normally be able to eat chocolate.
There is a large and ever changing selection of seasonal and locally-sourced fillings such as finger lime, ginger, macadamia, coconut, sour cherry, pistachio and cranberry and, more recently, Sarah has added a hot chocolate powder and variety of flavoured fudges.
