MPs welcome carbon price details
NORTHERN Rivers Federal Labor MPs Janelle Saffin and Justine Elliot have both welcomed the Federal Government’s announcement of the details behind its efforts to price carbon pollution.
Ms Saffin, the Member for Page, and Ms Elliot, the Richmond MP, said Sunday’s announcement that large businesses will pay for the pollution they emit into the atmosphere would help ensure Australia reduced its greenhouse gas emissions in the hope the negative consequences of climate change can be minimised.
“For the first time in this country’s history, Australia’s big polluters will have to pay for the pollution they create,” Ms Saffin said.
Ms Elliot stressed that the carbon tax would be paid by large businesses, not by householders.
“A carbon price is a tax on our biggest polluters – not ordinary older Australians,” she said.
“But because some of these big polluters may choose to pass on these costs to households, we have announced a comprehensive household assistance package, aimed at those who need it the most.”
