FEDERAL Health Minister Tanya Plibersek has praised New Zealand's conservative government after it announced plans to introduce tobacco plain packaging laws.

"We are absolutely delighted the New Zealand Government has joined Australia in putting the health and welfare of its citizens ahead of profits for big tobacco," Ms Plibersek said.

"Plain-packaging laws mean tobacco companies cannot use their products as mobile billboards - a successful marketing technique when it comes to recruiting young people as smokers."

Australia introduced its world-first plain-packaging laws in December after surviving a High Court challenge by British American Tobacco and other companies earlier in 2012.

The plain packaging laws removed tobacco company logos and include new and larger graphic health warnings.
