Movie review: Goddess

TAKE Shirley Valentine, cross her with Nigella Lawson, through in a dash of Glee and a sprinkle of razzle dazzle and the result is the Aussie musical rom-com Goddess.

Filled with cute little ditties, relatable characters and quirky costumes, it's a fun, feel good flick bound to give you a case of the fuzzies.

The film follows a frustrated stay at home mum with only her toddler twins to keep her company and a webcam to communicate with her absent husband who is traipsing the globe recording whales.

She soon turns to singing to entertain herself and her ditties dubbed 'sink songs' go viral and attract the attention of a ball-breaking corporate woman set on making the mum a star.

The allure of fame beckons and moral dilemmas ensure.

The moralizing about sacrificing family for fame is a little dreary and predictable and director Mark Lamprell ladles a little too heavily from the pot of sentimentality at times and chokes a little on clichés.

But it's also shamelessly uplifting, infectious and fun.

Laura Michelle Kelly in the lead role is simply sublime.

Kelly rose to fame in the London production of Mary Poppins and is a delight to watch.

Whether it's dressed in washing up gloves at her kitchen sink, fantasizing about a decadent lifestyle or channelling her inner vamp with the help of a broom, she is a natural and dazzles on screen.

Ronan Keating in his first film role proves he can do more than just sing and is the perfect match for Kelly.

Magda Szubanski's ball-breaking business woman routine is the weakest link with her character a confusion of clichés.

Fun, frothy and fanciful; doing the washing up never looked so fun.
