Motorcyclist in head-on accident

A MOTORCYCLIST suffered a fractured femur and a fractured pelvis following a head-on collision with a car on the Summerland Way, north of Kyogle, on Thursday afternoon.

The 51-year-old man failed to negotiate a sweeping left-hand bend at Unumgar between Grevillia and Woodenbong shortly after 3pm, crossing the double centre lines and running into the path of oncoming traffic.

Police report he was thrown from his bike after hitting the front driver’s side of the oncoming vehicle about 400 meters from McIntosh Road in Unumgar.

It was estimated both vehicles were travelling about 80km/h.

The man was travelling in convey with two other motorcyclists who witnessed the accident and raised the alarm at a nearby phone box.

A truck driver also stopped to assist.

Police and ambulance attended the scene and the Westpac rescue helicopter was dispatched though was prevented from landing due to bad weather which hampered rescue efforts.

The man was taken to Lismore Base Hospital where he is reported to be in a stable condition.
