A FATHER died after a speeding driver's interaction with police allegedly caused a tragic chain reaction.

The death of 66-year-old Michaelangelo Parkes in Mount Mellum will be examined at an inquest in March.

Dan Bartlett, counsel assisting the coroner, said Mr Parkes died on July 31, 2016, "in the course of a police operation”.

On Monday, he told a pre-inquest conference that a police officer on Old Gympie Road pulled over a Toyota Yaris driver, "a woman of advanced years”, he believed was exceeding the 60 km/h limit.

The woman pulled over into a driveway, just north of the Clarkes Rd t-junction, Mr Bartlett told Brisbane Coroners Court.

The police senior sergeant parked up after the woman pulled over and both cars were in a driveway "roughly parallel” to Old Gympie Rd, Mr Bartlett said.

Meanwhile, a Hyundai Santa Fe SUV driver was approaching just as the woman was pulling out.

Mr Parkes was riding a Kawasaki GT-750 motorcycle behind the Santa Fe.

Mr Bartlett said the police officer was believed to have motioned at the Santa Fe driver to slow down.

The Hyundai driver applied his brakes, and so did Mr Parkes.

But Mr Bartlett said the 66-year-old then lost control "and collided with the parked police car”.

The court heard the Santa Fe driver and the police officer tried saving Mr Parkes but he died at the scene.

Police started an investigation, taking dashcam footage from the police car.

An autopsy found Mr Parkes died from chest injuries.

In May 2017 Coroner Terry Ryan wrote to Mr Parkes's family, saying he was not planning to have an inquest.

Mr Parkes's next of kin wrote back in June, asking for an inquest to be held, and Mr Ryan agreed.

Seven witnesses, mostly police, are expected to give evidence.

The inquest is expect to happen on March 13. -NewsRegional
