Motor mechanic is finely tuned
THE fine art of tuning a car engine by ear is still alive and well at Bayshore Drive Motors in Byron Bay.
Mechanic Mat Stenner and wife Kelly have owned the business since 2004. Aside from offering a full range of service for the latest models Mr Stenner specialises in servicing older style cars.
He says that these days many mechanics rely too heavily on electronic diagnostics.
"They don't have the manual skills needed to build maintain and tune older cars," Mr Stenner said.
He says this over reliance on electronics makes it easy for under-qualified operators to set up businesses.
"There are not enough people doing old-style apprenticeships," Mr Stenner said.
"They can get qualifications just by doing a 12-month course and taking over a business.
"Every week we fix cars that have had bodgie work done on them.
"One local had a repair quote for $2000 that we fixed for $400."
Mr Stenner places a huge emphasis on building up a bond of trust with his customers who inevitably become personal friends.
Aside from his workshop, Bodyworx panel beaters shares the site and it's also the home of the Byron Bay Car Club.
"We are a one-stop shop for maintaining your car," Mr Stenner said.
