Mother, sister tell of heartbreak after fatal stabbing

THE mother of alleged Caboolture murder victim Freeman Brookes has described her heartbreak after learning of her son's violent death.

Kerry Pendergast said her son "shouldn't have died the way he did".

"He died tragically… at the end of the day, regardless of who he was and his lifestyle, he shouldn't have died," she said.

Mr Brookes was just 26 years old.

It has been alleged 22-year-old Stevee Jane Kennedy stabbed Mr Brookes in the stomach in the early hours of Sunday morning.

They had been in a relationship until recently.

Kennedy appeared in Caboolture Magistrates Court on Monday morning, and the matter was adjourned.

Mr Brookes's sister, Tahya Pendergast, said her brother led a troubled life.

"Drugs are what got you here and I hope everyone who reads this, and sees this that knows of someone with a drug addiction, to speak up and get themselves or someone they love out of this toxic, deadly lifestyle," she said.

"Otherwise one day it may be you mourning the death of your brother, sister or anyone you love."

She said the family was finding it difficult to process the news.

"We have hardly had a break to even come to terms with our loss," Ms Pendergast said.

"I never truly thought I would have to say goodbye to you; mum, Cj and I will forever hold you in our hearts that one day we may see you again.

"Tragically my brother's life came to a sad and violent death that no one should ever have to endure.

"And our mother is finding it hard to grasp closure that a mother should never have to endure a loss like this."
