Mother pleads not guilty to murder
A MOTHER has pleaded not guilty to murdering her baby girl on the grounds she was suffering from a mental illness when the 17-month-old drowned in a bathtub.
The 27-year-old is on trial in the NSW Supreme Court over the death of her baby in their Wollongong home three years ago.
The woman, whose guilty plea to manslaughter was reportedly rejected by the Crown, is accused of putting her baby in the tub before walking away and leaving the water running.
According to the Herald, the court heard the woman allegedly dressed the corpse in a christening gown, slept next to her and did not tell anyone the baby had died for two days.
It is reported the woman threw flowers and a card off notorious suicide spot The Gap and attempted suicide herself.
A letter found on the woman's computer addressed to her estranged partner allegedly read "I took (child's name deleted") with me because I was scared to leave her behind with you".
The woman's defence lawyer is expected to rely on a psychiatric report which suggests the woman had an "out f body experience" on the day of her baby's death.
The trial continues.
