IF you wake up this weekend and think 'what a great morning, let's go for a dip in the ocean' - you might want to think again.

The cyclone which wreaked havoc over parts of Fiji last weekend has generated a super-sized swell being described by some forecasters as potentially a "once-in-a-decade" swell event.

Tropical Cyclone Winston, the Category Five storm which hammered eastern parts of Fiji on Saturday night with winds up to 325kmh and waves of up to 12m has continued to generate huge swells in the direction of the East Coast expected to peak on the weekend.

Now sitting around a solid 2m on open stretches of coast, they are forecast to build further in the next 36 hours.

Surf Life Saving Far North Coast duty officer Jimmy Keough said a significant swell of "anything from 8 to 10 feet out of the east" would develop across the Far North Coast late on Thursday, peaking on Saturday before abating on Sunday.

Whether or not it lives up to expectations, only hardcore surfers are expected to be taking on the waves this weekend with beachgoers warned to take extreme caution.

"These conditions are only for really experienced surfers out there… we're just asking people to take care over the coming days in in the event of any emergency dial triple-000," Mr Keough said.

"Live savers will be on duty but with the forecast conditions we could be looking at it will be very treacherous.

"It may be very attractive to go there and have a look, but it's probably the best thing to be doing not to venture out into the water, the conditions will be large, powerful, exposed right along the entire Far North Coast area."
