Neighbours in court after violent attack

NAME calling was at the heart of the matter when a Gympie mother hit her neighbour during an argument, Gympie Magistrates Court heard yesterday.

Patricia Margaret Briggs, 31, who pleaded guilty to common assault and trespass, was fortunate to receive nothing more than six months probation for her actions on March 10.

The court heard Briggs reacted when she heard her 13-year-old daughter arguing over the fence with her neighbour.

It heard Briggs verbally abused her neighbour over the fence, before walking to the front fence and shouting at her from the driveway.

Despite the neighbour asking Briggs to stop, she entered the neighbour's yard and asked "Do you want a go?"

Briggs then slapped the neighbour on each cheek and pulled her hair with both hands, dragging the woman down.

She then punched the victim in the back repeatedly until she eventually let her hair go and the woman fell to the ground.

A representative for Briggs told the court his client reacted to the adult neighbour's taunts of her physically disabled daughter.

Magistrate M. Baldwin said the saddest thing about the situation was not only the violence, but the bad example of conflict resolution in front of the children.

She reminded Briggs it takes only one punch to kill and violence is never acceptable.
