Mother charged with murder of toddler found in creek

THE mother of 14-month-old Sanaya Sahib, whose body was found in a Melbourne creek early on Sunday morning, has confessed to killing the toddler, a court has heard.

Sofina Nikat, 22, faced an out-of-sessions court hearing after being charged with one count of murder.

She was remanded in custody to face Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

The homicide squad's Detective Senior Sergeant Stuart Bailey told the court Nikat made the full admission during a police interview.

Nikat had been questioned in the presence of her lawyer after being arrested in Mont Albert on Tuesday morning, he said.
