Morning blaze destroys business

UP to 40 firefighters battled a blaze which destroyed a business in Keen Street, Lismore, early this morning.

Numerous triple-zero calls were made when the blaze started just after 5.40am.

Firefighters reported the lower ground floor of the brick and iron building was on fire, and crews were sent inside wearing breathing apparatus.

The fire then spread and went through the roof.

A spokesman from FireCom said other buildings, including the ambulance station and the Centrelink building, were threatened by the flames.

"The actual premises on fire was an auto panel shop," he said.

"The fire was also impinging on a solicitor's building to the right.

"A later message was received that the fire had reached the roof void and reached the solicitor's building.

"Both buildings were on fire."

The blaze was finally put out by 8am.

Investigations into the cause of the fire are continuing.
