More calls for backpacker tax to be abandoned

Another voice has joined growing calls for the Turnbull government to abolish its proposed "backpacker tax" in the coming budget.

The National Union of Workers joined the tourism and farming industries yesterday in calling for the proposal to be abandoned. The government has committed to a review of the tax.

The new system is set to be introduced on July 1 and would result in working holidaymakers losing the $20,000 tax-free threshold and being taxed at 32.5% from the first dollar they earned.
