Montaigne: Hear her sing In the Dark
IN THE Dark is Montaigne's latest single - a haunting, weird, creative and daring song that has raised eyebrows and got many music fans talking.
Sydney-based Jessica Cerro was a Triple J Unearthed High finalist in 2012 with her indie pop song Anyone But Me, but decided to finish her secondary studies.
In late 2013, Jessica decided to adopt the moniker Montaigne, inspired by the 16th century philosopher and essayist.
Shortly after completing her HSC, Montaigne began recording her debut EP with producer Tony Buchen (The Preatures, Andy Bull).
Life of Montaigne was her first EP, released last year. She was then invited to perform at the Mullum Music Festival.
Her father is Argentinean and her mother is Spanish-Filipino.
"My dad was a professional soccer player in Malaysia when I was born," she said.
"We moved to Canberra when I was two years old and then to Sydney when I was five, so I grew up here (in Australia)."
Given her vocal skills in her EP, it's surprising to hear she was sick while she recorded it.
"I was actually sick with a sore throat when I recorded that EP and my voice wasn't at full strength," she said.
Hear Montaigne at the Byron Theatre on Sunday, from 7pm. $30.
