Minute's silence for McCarthy

A MINUTE'S silence will be observed before this weekend's semi-finals as a mark of respect for Port Adelaide and Collingwood player John McCarthy who died in Las Vegas on Sunday morning while on a holiday with Port teammates.

More details surrounding the lead-up to the tragedy emerged yesterday, with club spokesman Andrew Rutter confirming McCarthy had spoken to his long-time partner, Danielle Smarrelli, in Adelaide just before he fell 9m to his death from a roof of the Flamingo Hotel and Casino, about 5.40am.

Ms Smarrelli told Port Adelaide officials McCarthy sounded confused and said he wanted to return home, 3AW reported.

The Flamingo is about 4km from where the 22-year-old's teammates were staying at the Hard Rock Hotel, suggesting McCarthy may have been disoriented.

Carlton yesterday announced former Collingwood and West Coast premiership coach Mick Malthouse would lead the Blues for the next three seasons.

In his 28 seasons as a senior coach, the 59-year-old has led his teams to the finals 19 times, making the grand final eight times for three premierships.
