Millions petition against Trump visit
AN ONLINE petition seeking to cancel President Donald Trump's state visit to the UK because it would cause embarrassment to the Queen has received more than 1.5 million signatures.
The petition was created by Graham Guest of Leeds. It President Trump should still be permitted to enter the UK, it says he should not be invited for a state visit:
"Donald Trump's well- documented misogyny and vulgarity disqualifies him from being received by Her Majesty the Queen or the Prince of Wales. Therefore, during the term of his presidency Donald Trump should not be invited to the United Kingdom for an official state visit.”
A petition with 100,000 signatures must be considered for debate by MPs.
The petition was drawn up before President Trump's highly controversial immigration ban was announced. Since then Mr Guest told The Independent: "It's added a new dimension to things and until that ban is lifted I don't think he should come to the country at all in any capacity,” he said.
Despite the petition, Prime Minister Theresa May is not backing down on her invitation. She told reporters, "The United States is a close ally of the United Kingdom. We work together across many areas of mutual interest and we have that special relationship between us,” she said. "I have issued that invitation for a state visit for President Trump ... and that invitation stands.”
