Milk producer starts to make ground on big supermarkets

WHILE major supermarkets wage a milk price war, it's leaving a bad taste in the mouths of many local shoppers.

For two years supermarket giants have sold a litre of generic brand milk for $1 to entice customers.

It's been at the cost of farmers, but Baffle Creek Dairy Fresh owner Bruce Poulsen is reporting a fight back, with heightened support for his independent produce.

"We've got very loyal customers; it's increasing all the time," he said.

Mr Poulsen said continued awareness of the issue was securing their livelihood.

"If people continue to buy that $1 milk there will be no dairy farmers left in Queensland," he said.

Mr Poulsen is in a better position than other farmers because he packages his produce.

"I became a processor as well as a farmer; that way all the money stays in this area," he said.

"All the processors are owned by overseas companies."

The Great Australian Ice Creamery in the Valley Shopping Centre has also cut out the middle man, dealing directly with the Baffle Creek farm.

Baffle Creek milk is available at IGA stores in Gladstone, Rosella St Store, Top Hill Takeaway and The Great Australian Ice Creamery.
