Taste of home ... where can you find the food you miss most?

SOMETIMES family is not what new immigrants to Australia miss the most.

They don't necessarily miss the beauty of their former homeland, either.

What they long for is much more basic than that.

The food.

Adjusting to Australian flavours can be a challenge, but sourcing products from their homeland is not nearly as difficult a task as it used to be.

Major supermarkets such as Coles have an "international section" and a variety of special stores, including Fair Go Foods in Maroochydore, cater specifically to people looking for foreign foods.

Even German supermarket Aldi has recognised the market value of catering to the palate.

Aldi introduced South African products yesterday for its Wednesday specials.

These include the favourites biltong (a dried meat, almost jerky-like), droe wors (dried sausage) and Provita (a cracker-type biscuit).

Hundreds of former South Africans were packing their bags early with products they have missed since making the move.

Nicola Powell knows exactly what it is like to fantasise about foods.

Since moving from South Africa to Cooroy four years ago, Miss Powell hankers for items such as Hunters Gold (a cider) and Nik Naks (type of chips).

Fair Go Food's first owner, Jill Bruce, was one of the pioneers in realising the importance of catering to homesick customers.

When Ms Bruce started the Wises Rd shop, "we had the monopoly".

"Very good friends of ours, who are South African, said how much they missed foods from home, so we started selling South African, New Zealand, Asian and Italian products," she said.

The store has now expanded its offerings to include Turkish and extra Asian foods.
