Ballina teen to represent NSW at national soccer competition
BEING a midfield general is a tough job - but Ballina junior soccer ace Dominic Weaver is making it look easy.
The 14-year-old is among a handful of the region's representatives preparing to face some of Australia's best young players at the forthcoming Football Federation Australia National Youth Championships.
Selection for the Northern New South Wales Country under-14 squad is the latest notable achievement for Dominic, who is at home playing in the centre of the pitch.
The Barcelona FC-mad player, who recently helped his Palm Beach side achieve junior success, said he enjoyed conducting the action.
"I guess I'm not that big, or that quick, so that's why I'm suited to the midfield," he said.
"I just like passing, tackling and getting the ball a lot.
"I love the feeling of controlling the game with your other midfielders. That's why I like that position."
Dominic, who attends Ballina's Southern Cross School K-12, has enjoyed a successful few months on the pitch.
His Gold Coast-based club side recently captured its National Premier League title.
The Year Eight student earned a place with the club, which is developing the skills of scores of talented juniors, after catching the eye of squad selectors.
He travels the long distance north for training three hours a week and plays weekly matches across south-east Queensland as well.
"It is pretty tough," he said. "It gets a bit hard doing my homework.
"Sometimes my parents have to drag me to training.
"It can be a bit nerve-racking playing in front of the supporters there (as well).
"It is a great club and everyone is friendly."
Dominic earned his place in the Northern New South Wales squad after impressing in trials involving scores of young hopefuls.
Two squads have been announced - under 13s and under-14s - for next month's tournament.
Dominic, who took up the game about seven years ago and honed his talents on Tintenbar's playing fields, is looking forward to the event.
IT is a carnival featuring some of the best young players from across the country.
