Mick Fanning through to round three of the Hurley Pro

THE Hurley Pro at Lower Trestles in California kicked off yesterday in clean one metre waves.

Aussie competitors struggled in round one, however Tweed's Mick Fanning won his heat to progress to straight to round three while world champion Joel Parkinson was beaten.

Parko went into round two having to win to stay alive in the competition, he easily took care of Local wildcard Ian Crane to progress to round three.

Both Parkinson and Fanning should be back in the water today if the event runs, a lay day is always possible though.

Other Aussies to progress were Taj Burrow and Julian Wilson who both won their first round heats to skip round two.

With the title race well and truly heating up between Kelly Slater, Parkinson and Fanning on the rankings, Trestles shapes as an important stop on the tour going into the European leg.

Fanning takes on Alejo Muniz in round three while Parkinson comes up against Lennox Head's Adam Melling.

The three surfers are ranked in the top three on the ASP rankings coming into the event.
