'Messed up': Hidden cameras in farm stay's bedrooms, shower

A SUNSHINE Coast business owner has been charged after hidden cameras were allegedly found in backpacker accommodation.

Dutch backpacker Maron de Rooij, 26, made the discovery when he went to the Glass House Mountains site to start work earlier this month.

The job, which was advertised on social media, was offering free meals and accommodation, qualification for a second-year visa and "a lot of fun".

Mr de Rooij said it seemed like the perfect opportunity, and jumped at the chance to live and work on the Sunshine Coast.

But when he arrived, he told the Daily he immediately noticed something was wrong in his room.

He said he found six hidden cameras and a microphone, including one placed in the shower, in the accommodation.

"These are the kind of stories you hear about, you don't experience them yourself. But obviously I did, I just got very lucky that I figured it out really soon," Mr de Rooij said.

He said his background in IT and camera surveillance helped him find the cameras, but was concerned others would not have been so lucky.

"If you're going to put a big infrared light in front of my bed ... that's a dead give away for me. I just started looking further and further and that's when I found the rest."

Mr de Rooij said the two other rooms available for backpackers were also "completely rigged".

After seeing the business advertise for the same position after police had raided the site, Mr de Rooij wanted to warn other backpackers about his experience.

His post in the Backpacker Jobs in Australia Facebook group has been shared almost 500 times and has dozens of concerned comments.

In a statement, the business has denied any wrongdoing and said Mr de Rooij's claims were a "well-orchestrated retaliation strike against us".

"The original Facebook post made by the backpacker contains video showing nothing more than corrugated tin, which has hundreds of holes in it for decorative effect," the statement reads.

"The regular haters and keyboard warriors of the Facebook world have resurfaced and taken great pleasure spreading this.

"Is there legal grounds for a case of defamation of character here? Most likely yes, but what's the point? Mud sticks and the damage is done."

A Queensland Police Service spokesman told the Daily the 44-year-old man from Glass House Mountains had been charged with recordings in breach of privacy and possession of tainted property.

He is due to appear at the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on June 20.

Mr de Rooij is still looking for an opportunity to complete his 88 days of farm work to extend his visa, but he says the incident has "left a mark".

"It's a bit messed up, but it's probably not the whole of Australia that's like this," he said.
