Merriman to be top of his game

THE 2008 Polygeine Australian PGA Seniors Championship returns to Byron Bay from December 12-14.

The 54-hole championship has attracted players from every state of Australia as well as New Zealand and Japan.

David Merriman is the defending champion but he will need to be at his best to hold off the likes of Mike Ferguson, Bob Shearer, John Clifford, Rodger Davis, Greg Hohnen and Brian Jones.

Many of these players toured on overseas circuits during their heydays.

Shearer won an Australian Open and played on the US Tour, Ferguson has won on the Australian and Japanese tours, Davis has won a PGA and won the Bicentennial at Royal Melbourne against a world-class field. He has played in the US and Europe.

Jeff Woodland played the US Tour for five years; Brian Jones won numerous events on the Japanese tours in the 1970s and 1980s. It is a great coup for the Bay to be hosting the PGA. The course is in great nick.

There are still spot left for amateurs to get a game (call Greg Stewart on 6685 6977).

Spectators are more than welcome. It is a great opportunity for locals to get up close with some of Australia's best from the past.
