The Concept X-Class arrived in Melbourne from Germany this week for some promotional activities, before heading off to explore the countryside for some beautiful photography in typical Australian settings.

Due to go on sale in 2018, Managing Director of Mercedes-Benz Vans Australia and New Zealand Diane Tarr said "Australia and New Zealand are critical markets for the success of the X-Class.

"The Concept has been flown from Germany so our dealers can get a detailed briefing about the vehicle and continue their preparation for a successful launch of the X-Class in 2018."

Australia's demand for high value work/lifestyle trucks grows ever stronger - witnessed by Toyota's HiLux being our best-selling car for 2016 - and the luxury Merc double cab ute is sure to be welcomed by an eager buying market.

The X-Class pickups, which will share platforms with the Nissan Navara and Renault Alaskan utes thanks to a Daimler/Renault-Nissan alliance, should compete against range topping VW Amarok, Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger and others, all priced around $60,000 in their highest specifications.

Mercedes says the X-Class will "know no compromise" with a ladder-type frame, high-torque six-cylinder diesel engine, permanent all-wheel-drive and two on-demand diff locks.

Payload will be more than 1100kg and braked towing capacity 3500kg.
