Men of League ‘here to help’

MEN of League Foundation Northern Rivers Division has a new committee and is looking to expand the good work of the organisation in the region.

At a meeting in Lismore chaired by NSW operations manager Jim Hall – who thanked the outgoing committee – and executive officer Martin Cook, all positions were declared vacant and a new committee elected.

Former ARL boss Bob Abbott is the patron, while Phil Chesham, of Ballina, is the president.

Denis Meaney, of Ballina, is the vice-president; Tony Cicchinelli, of Lismore, is secretary; and Peter
Boland, of Ballina, is treasurer.

Phil Loader, of Byron Bay, is the welfare officer.

Committee members are Steve Colman (Ballina), Ken Flanagan (Ballina), Kevin Junee (Lismore), Tony Koellner (Ballina), John Mayes (Evans Head) and Michael Ross (Ballina).

Also on the committee is the State Member for Lismore, Thomas George, and his extensive local knowledge and contacts will be a bonus as Men of League Foundation Northern Rivers Division looks to expandits reach in the region.

The new committee agreed that representation was needed from key towns in the area: Casino, Kyogle, Evans Head, Ballina and Lismore.

Two major events have been planned:

  • A golf day at Ballina Golf Club on Sunday, October 25. It will be a four-person mixed Ambrose, with a shotgun start at 11.30am. Cost is $35 and includes green fees, lunch and dinner.
  • A race day at Ballina Jockey Club on December 12. More details will be published as planning proceeds.

The meeting also discussed widening activities to include events in Lismore, Casino and Kyogle.
Men of League Foundation Northern Rivers Division already has established a reputation for its charitable work, with the Lismore Base Hospital’s Our Kids organisation, the Far North Coast Autism Centre, the Ballina Hospital’s appeal for new X-ray equipment and Kyogle man Tyson Alcorn, who was seriously injured in a motorbike accident, among the beneficiaries.

Patron Bob Abbott said the new committee was keen to continue Men of League’s ideal of helping people in need.

“We’re here to help,” he said.

“There’s a lot of ex-players who need help but won’t ask.”

Abbott urged anyone interested in rugby league and the Men of League’s ideals to ‘be a part of this wonderful part of rugby league’.
