Melling makes big final

ADAM MELLING has stunned the surfing world by winning his way through to the final of the Billabong Pro at Jeffreys Bay, South Africa.

The ASP tour rookie from Lennox Head was beaten by Jordy Smith in the final of the event but it will go down as Melling’s finest day.

After failing to make it past the second round in the opening three contests of the 2010 tour, Melling was in danger of missing the cut – which comes after the next event.

But his runner-up effort in South Africa has catapulted him up the rankings to 19th in the world.

For fellow rookie Smith it was the first victory on tour.

Melling was the second surfer from Lennox to fall to the South African giant after Owen Wright bowed out earlier.

Wright is 11th in the race for the title with the next event in Tahiti from August 23.
