Melling closes in on quarters after finishing third

LENNOX HEAD surfer Adam Melling is one win away from the quarter-finals of the Quiksilver Pro at Snapper Rocks on the Gold Coast.

Melling came third in a fourth round heat dominated by defending champion Taj Burrow yesterday. Burrow finished with a score of 18.06 (out of a possible 20) with Jeremy Flores second on 13.83 with Melling further back on 10.07.

There are no eliminations in the fourth round with Melling now set for the sudden-death fifth round against current world champion Joel Parkinson scheduled for today.

Melling showed glimpses of his best in the fourth round heat yesterday and has performed well during the week.

He also had a bit of luck when Hawaiian John John Florence pulled out of their third round elimination heat with an ankle injury.

Lennox-Ballina Boardriders teammate Owen Wright was the surprise elimination of the competition when he lost his second round heat against Hawaiian Dusty Payne on Sunday.

Byron Bay surfer Kieren Perrow was also eliminated when he lost to Brazilian young gun Filipe Toledo. Lennox Head surfer Tyler Wright started her year off in style taking out the Roxy Pro.
