Medieval Melee brings vikings to Coraki
VIKINGS will invade Coraki this weekend for a day of sword fights and feasting at the inaugural Medieval Melee on the banks of the Richmond River.
The Medieval Melee is the brainchild of Coraki Riverside Markets and events coordinator, Louise Woolbank, who asked local vikings at the annual Lismore Lantern Parade to be involved.
"I'm a history teacher and I really like re-enactments as they are a great way of educating people," she said.
"So I suggested to the committee that we have a medieval fair as a way for the whole of the community to come together and enjoy themselves."
From 10am until 6pm this Saturday, people can watch as the invading Rognvalds Lith do battle with nearby viking tribes.
See peasants and local tribes-people compete in the tug-of-war, throwing events, the sock-off and other medieval competitions.
See how vikings used their skills to make tools, clothing and food; grab a souvenir, or something to eat at the medieval barbecue.
There will also be medieval craft activities for the kids, Ms Woolbank said.
There will be two food options at the Medieval Melee, Karl's Picnic - to eat at medieval stalls - and Jarl's Feast - for a three course authentic medieval feast.
People are encouraged to dress up as part of the festivities, with prizes awarded for the best dressed authentic medieval costume, best Game of Thrones outfit, and best Lord of the Rings-style dress.
"If it is a success we hope to make it an annual event," Ms Woolbank said.
