Mayor's six-year battle with breast cancer ends with a pill

JENNY Dowell has just completed a near six year journey that began with her diagnosis with breast cancer shortly after she was first elected as the mayor of Lismore.

Cr Dowell has posted on her Facebook page this morning saying she was taking her last anti-breast cancer pill after five years and five months of taking them daily.

Cr Dowell estimated she had taken almost 2000 Armidex tablets since she was prescribed them after undergoing surgery and chemotherapy.

"I'm hoping the side effects ease but who knows- it might just be old age that makes my bones ache," she wrote on her Facebook page.

"I hope as years go on that BC goes not recur but for now as from the start, I feel like a survivor."

Cr Dowell paid tribute to the friends and family who had supported her through her battle with breast cancer.

"To women and men out there who are undergoing treatment, I hope this happy end of treatment time does eventually arrive for you too," she wrote.
