Toowoomba mayor joins fight against domestic violence

IF ANYONE is ready to raise the battle cry against domestic violence, it's Mayor Paul Antonio.

The white ribbon ambassador has pledged his whole-hearted support to The Chronicle's media campaign by signing the petition for meaningful change.

This petition, which will be sent directly to the premiers of New South Wales and Queensland, is lobbying for the introduction of specialist family violence courts and the introduction of respectful relationships education in all schools.

TERROR AT HOME: THE CRIMES THAT SHOCKED US ALL

Cr Antonio is a firm believer in the idea that, if you stand by and do nothing, you're part of the problem.

"We need to work together to stamp out domestic violence," he said.

"The problem with domestic violence is it passes from generation to generation and the family thinks it's normal.

"It's critical we educate our young people and say this is not normal."

He knew from experience that domestic violence was a problem which could fly under the radar.

"In my youth, I didn't even know domestic violence existed. Probably not until my mid-20s did I become aware of it."

It became personal when, for many years, he became involved with a family struggling with domestic violence in his home town of Millmerran.

The campaign has the support of Australian of the Year Rosie Batty, Queensland Chief Justice Tim Carmody and retired league legend Steve Renouf.
