WATCH: Storm trooper 'urges' Princess Leia to donate blood

A LEGION of storm troopers are calling on the community to join them as blood donors in Lismore today for the official May the 4th Be With You day.

Ben Gordon, who donates plasma regularly, will lead the 501st Legion members at the Red Cross blood bank.

Two staff members will also transform into Princess Leia from the original movies and Rey from the latest film.

The Star Wars fans have asked community members to come down today, give blood, have a bit of a laugh and get a photo taken with them.

"We use these costumes to help local charities and community events and to bring a bit of excitement to people's lives," Mr Gordon said.

"We're excellent marksmen so I don't see why we couldn't add needles to our arsenal against the rebel forces."

Of course, Mr Gordon and his legion will not actually be drawing blood: They will be there to offer donors support.

Lismore Blood Centre manager Leanne Latham, or Rey, said it was a joy to discover the storm troopers were keen to help them reach new donors.

"It's very exciting, the fact they wanted to get on board and support us at this time of year, getting into the colder months," she said.

"It just makes the whole experience a bit less scary ... there's a light side to it all."

The 501st Legion has 7000 members worldwide.

"We make and build movie-accurate costumes of the bad guys from the Star Wars movie franchise," Mr Gordon said.

Mr Gordon said he "troops as a family".

"My wife has been a member for 12 months and our sons are in the kids version, the Galactic Academy," he said.

An estimated nine million Australians are eligible to give blood but only 500,000 actively do so.

Visit donateblood.com.au or call 13 14 95 for more information about donating blood and to book in a time.

The Red Cross blood donor centre is located at 1/26 Bounty St.
