CUBAN American band The Mavericks is itching to play for Aussie punters at this weekend's CMC Rocks North Queensland festival.

The country garage band travelled Down Under for the first time last year to play the Gympie Muster, and they put on such a good show CMC organisers snapped them up for a return trip.

"It was not my first Gympie Muster, but it was the first for The Mavericks," drummer Paul Deakin told APN.

"I came years before with Kevin Montgomery, who was a smaller artist so we camped there. I absolutely loved it."

The Muster punters loved them, with the party band named one of the biggest hits of the festival.

"We've had platinum records from Australia, but we never got down there before we disbanded," Deakin said.

"The reception we got at the Muster was amazing. I think there's something about people at these festivals especially. It's more about music than just what they hear on the radio. Australians are about a celebration of music and having a good time and The Mavericks are somewhat of a goodtime band (laughs)."

The Grammy Award-winning group reunited in 2012 after an eight-year hiatus and released their comeback album In Time last year.

"Originally the reunion was about being offered ridiculous money for a reunion tour," Deakin said.

"(Lead singer) Raul (Malo), Robert (Reynolds) and I met for dinner, the core members, because I needed to know that they really wanted to do it.

"It felt a bit disingenuous to just cash in on the hits."

The band recently finished recording the follow-up to In Time, laying down 12 new songs in a record five days.

"On first impressions, it feels like we've been playing for a while," he said.

"It feels like a bit more of a live record, whereas In Time was a bit more of a reunion and meeting each other again. We've been on the road for two and a half years, so we're firing on all cylinders.

"To quote Raul, what started as 20 dates of a reunion tour is probably going to turn into another 20 years of The Mavericks."

The yet-to-be-titled album will be released next year and is certain to do well.

CMC Rocks North Queensland plays the Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre on Saturday.
