Former local teammates to face off at national titles
RUGBY UNION: FORMER Wollongbar-Alstonville juniors Alex Gibbon, Jake McIntyre and Rowan Perry will square off in the final of the National Rugby Championship in Brisbane this weekend.
McIntyre is five-eighth for Brisbane City while Perry will likely start from the bench at flanker for the Canberra-based UC Vikings.
The pair not only played together at Wollongbar but also in the Australian under-20 side that took part in the IRB Junior World Championship last year.
Former Lennox Head junior Sam Croke was also in the under-20s side and plays NRC with the NSW Country Eagles.
Gibbon will be on the bench for Brisbane and has spent most of his time playing Shute Shield in Sydney and for the Australian Rugby Sevens team in recent years.
McIntyre has been a standout in the NRC and won the inaugural competition with Brisbane last year.
He achieved a lifelong dream when he made his Super Rugby debut with the Queensland Reds this season.
Perry has not played Super Rugby but has been picked in the Australian Barbarians team that will travel to New Zealand next month to play the Heartland XV.
The 21-year-old was selected along with the best non-contracted Super Rugby players in the country.
Meanwhile, Brisbane City will be the team to beat on Saturday. They have the home ground advantage at Ballymore and have won nine straight.
McIntyre sealed the semi-final win with the final try in a 47-32 effort at the same ground against the Sydney Stars.
City has some big names with former Australian rugby league international Karmichael Hunt and Reds flanker Liam Gill who captained the side and scored two tries against the Stars.
The game will be televised on Foxtel at 4pm on Fox Sports.
In other rugby, Far North Coast players Dan Boardman and Jake Brumley were selected in the train-on squad for the NSW Country Colts.
Boardman plays for Lennox Head and is moving to Sydney to play with Randwick while Brumley is a Bangalow junior.
