Marijuana to be put to medical test in Qld next year

TRIALS of marijuana's medicinal effectiveness could be put to the test in Queensland as early as next year.

Caloundra MP Mark McArdle, who is also the shadow health minister, questioned Health Minister Cameron Dick at a parliamentary budget hearing on Wednesday about Queensland's involvement in medical cannabis trials.

Mr Dick said the government would work with NSW and Victoria in the trials.

"This is the first trial conducted into the possible benefits of medicinal cannabis in Queensland's history," he said.

"We will commence trials - that is our aim - in 2016," Mr Dick said.

He said they were still discussing the trial's research process and how Queensland would participate.

But he said the Queensland Government had committed to test the drug for pediatric purposes.

Mr Dick said the government could spend about $3 million as part of the trials, but this was not definite yet.

Mr McArdle asked which organisation would be conducting the trials, but Mr Dick did not answer.

"You can't tell me how much. You can't tell me who's going to run the trials. What you're simply saying is something is happening somewhere," Mr McArdle said.

Mr Dick was also asked about the government's intention to tackle the epidemic of the drug ice.

He said there was no rush on spending money on tackling ice until the national taskforce completed its work and more was known about ice use in the community.
