Many who abuse children also abuse spouse

Lismore's Men & Family Centre is hosting a conference to address domestic violence issues.

The Working with Men Who Use Violence conference will include a presentation from Rodney Vlais, the acting chief executive of No To Violence, which is the peak body representing men's behaviour change programs.

Mr Vlais will discuss the correlation between men's violence against intimate partners and child abuse, with up to 60% of child abuse cases also involving violence against a partner.

"For a range of historical reasons, child protection and family services systems have been reluctant to engage perpetrators of this violence," Mr Vlais said.

"Given that the safety of the non-offending parent has strong links to the safety of their children, addressing the source of the violence can be a critical pathway towards child safety.

To register for the conference to be held at Invercauld House tomorrow or the follow-up workshop on Thursday, phone David Noakes on 6622 6116.
