Man who tortured partner for 15 hours sent to jail

PETROL, a lighter, chemicals and a towel made up Anthony Morgan Clarke's instruments of pain when he tortured his 20-year-old partner for more than 15 hours.

Clarke, 27, doused the woman in petrol and then lit her clothes on fire during the incident at Darra, east of Ipswich, in March, 2013.

He put the fire out, then splashed washing liquid in her face.

Clarke, who had taken methylamphetamine beforehand, then strangled the woman with a towel until she passed out.

He was declared a serious violent offender after pleading guilty in the Brisbane District Court on Friday to torturing the woman over two lengthy periods.

Crown prosecutor Dennis Kinsella said he had also taken to the woman with a steak knife, tools, lit cigarette and metal frying pan over eight hours in January last year.

Clarke threatened to kill her.

Mr Kinsella said Clarke's psychological hold over the woman was so strong she felt her only escape was death and she attempted to kill herself.

He said Clarke punched, pushed and tortured her because he was concerned she cheated on him.

Defence barrister Kim Bryson said, in Clarke's favour, he ensured the woman received medical treatment.

Ms Bryson said Clarke's mother was murdered when he was 11 and he had grown up around a lot of violence.

Judge Hugh Botting handed down a nine year-jail sentence.

Clarke has already spent 591 days in custody.
