Man who faked heart attack faces court

BENT over at a 90-degree angle and clad in green prison-issue track pants and top, an itinerant Lismore man who police claim faked a heart attack so he could escape a manhunt in an ambulance, has made a forlorn and brief appearance at Byron Bay Local Court.

Daniel Louis Buttress-Grove, 32, yesterday walked bent to the dock in the courtroom and, when seated, never once raised his head above the side of the dock to observe proceedings before Magistrate Jeff Linden.

After being chased through canefields outside Murwillumbah on Monday, he gave police the slip, only to be found the next day as a patient in Murwillumbah District Hospital.

No details of the case against him were mentioned in court and legal aid solicitor Ben Cochrane did not apply for bail on his behalf.

Mr Cochrane said no pleas would be entered and he needed to get all paperwork relating to the charges against Buttress-Grove. With no application for bail, Mr Cochrane said his client agreed to a longer adjournment.

Buttress-Grove appeared in court over outstanding warrants and is charged with 20 offences, including a series of old charges not related to the incidents at Murwillumbah on Monday, December 15.

Charges laid against Buttress-Grove by arresting Tweed Heads police on Tuesday include resisting a police officer, two counts of never being a licensed person who drove a motor vehicle on a road, and being a driver who stated a false name and address.

Other charges against him laid by Kingscliff police are having goods suspected of being stolen, and enter inclosed lands/premises without lawful excuse.

Outstanding charges laid by Lismore police in 2007 include: possession of a prohibited drug, custody of a knife in public, having goods suspected of being stolen, driving without a licence, negligent driving, using an unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle, and not giving particulars to the owner of damaged property.

The matter was adjourned to Lismore Local Court for mention on January 6.

Mr Linden said Buttress-Grove could appear via video-link.
