Man strips naked after car crashes into Clarence River

A YAMBA motorist has been arrested after crashing a vehicle into the Clarence River at Lawrence and stripping naked in public in a bizarre series of events.

Police have confirmed an investigation is under way following the incident, which took place about 6.10pm yesterday.

It is alleged the red station wagon drove around a number of vehicles waiting to board the car ferry at Lawrence, and stopped in the middle of the road near the boom gates before being approached by the operator.

When the operator opened the gates to allow onboard traffic to disembark, the car was driven toward the ferry before it veered sharply to the left, driving into the water and becoming stuck on cables.

It is believed the driver, a 39-year Yamba man, and a female passenger exited the vehicle through the windows.

Police were called after the man was then involved in an altercation with the ferry operator and removed all of his clothing.

He was arrested and taken to Grafton Police Station to undergo mandatory drug and alcohol testing.

Officers said a preliminary breath test recorded a negative result, but they were still awaiting the results of a blood sample.

The Bluff Point Ferry was not damaged in the crash, but was stopped for about an hour after the incident while the car was removed.

It has since returned to normal operation.
