Man who stole car with toddler in back seat returns to court

A RECENTLY released prisoner, who allegedly stole a family car while a toddler was still strapped in the back seat at Coffs Harbour this year, was back in court on Tuesday.

Dwayne Peckham, 32, is charged with the abduction of the two-year-old girl at Castle St in June.

The toddler and her six-year-old sister were in the back of their car and waiting for their dad to return from a nearby shop when Mr Peckham alleged jumped in the front seat.

The older girl was able to escape and raise the alarm but the toddler was allegedly taken on a 90-minute journey around Coffs Harbour before the car was dumped at an Ocean Pde motel.

Mr Peckham was arrested the following day and charged with take/detain person with intent to obtain advantage, unlawfully take/drive motor vehicle with person in it, stealing and custody of a knife in a public place.

His parole was revoked and he was returned to jail for at least 15 months.

He appeared in the Coffs Harbour Local Court via video link on Tuesday.

The case was adjourned until October 15.
